New Year, New Focus

On New Years Day of 2023, Sain Mamau sponsored a cultural education event entitled “Reach for Your Potential” for Micronesian young adults at the Holiday Inn Express hotel in Waikiki. The first of its kind, it included a lecture on how to begin a journey to success as a Pacific Islander, using a biblical based approach. An accompanying lecture on the cultural art of weaving was followed by demonstrations with community elders and opportunities to practice bag and shingle making.

Participants entered the room respectfully, taking in their surroundings and appearing a little hesitant. Soon music blended with enthusiastic youthful voices during the opportunity to talk story while sharing a meal. Group singing with guitar accompaniment followed, lead by a young Micronesian demonstrating traditional music skills. The two weaving experts were introduced and interpretation was provided as needed during the demonstrations and lessons.

“I wasn’t sure what to expect,” one young man remarked afterward, “but it was good. I think we should do it again.”

“It’s exciting to be a part of something new”, a young lady remarked, with her sister adding, “I would love to learn more about weaving.”

The event was a kick off to a new weekly cultural program sponsored by Sain Mamau for young adults. Topic selection will be guided by cultural leadership and participants and supported by lessons in faith and spiritual health.
